Overview

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Trichomoniasis can all cause infections in the genitals, rectum, and throat. These infections are easily transmitted by vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse with someone infected with the condition.

Symptoms

These are similar in men and women. Some symptoms may include:

• Pain during urination
• Burning or itching in the genitals
• Bleeding after sex
• Yellowish/greenish fluid from the female vagina that smells
• White discharge from the penis

Treatment

Antibiotics like metronidazole (Flagyl) are used to treat certain STDs. The medications are normally given orally, however, an injection may be required.
