Overview

Dandruff is characterized by dry, flaky skin that often affects the scalp. Seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by dry, peeling skin, as well as redness and irritation in afflicted regions. While the scalp is most usually afflicted, it can also affect the brows, sides of the nose, beard region, and center chest. This syndrome is exacerbated by inflammation and yeast overgrowth.

Symptoms

Dry, flaky skin that affects hair-bearing regions, as well as different degrees of underlying skin redness and irritation, with occasional skin peeling, crusting, or scabbing. These skin flakes can be small and white or big, oily, and yellow.

Treatment

• Topical leave-on drugs (clobetasol, fluocinonide, fluticasone)
• Medicated shampoos/washes that have active ingredients like ketoconazole, ciclopirox, or salicylic acid
